ABOUT GRENFELL CAMPUS
Grenfell Campus, Memorial University is located in the City of Corner Brook, the largest community in western Newfoundland and Labrador, an area of outstanding natural beauty in a mountainous coastal region. Since its foundation in 1975, Grenfell Campus has gained a strong reputation for high quality education across its three academic Schools: Arts and Social Science, Fine Arts, and Science and the Environment. The campus is home to approximately 1,200 students and 300 full-time academic and administrative staff, offers undergraduate majors and minors as well as graduate degrees and has an annual budget of approximately $31 million. The campus also includes the Bonne Bay Aquarium and Research Station (located in Gros Morne National Park) and works closely with the Western Regional School of Nursing. Campus facilities include an Art Gallery and Theatre, Grenfell Observatory, as well as scientific research laboratories, and the City of Corner Brook’s soon to be opened Regional Recreation Centre.
At Grenfell Campus, faculty, staff, and students enjoy a high degree of collegiality, reaping the benefits of an intimate multi-disciplinary campus setting and unique culture within a larger multi-campus system, which forms an integral part of the regional community. There is a strong tradition of undergraduate education with an emphasis on small class sizes and fostering student success. Faculty are active in diverse areas of teaching, research, creative activity and scholarship, and the campus has seen substantial recent growth in research and graduate programs at the Master’s and Ph.D. level. THE OPPORTUNITY
Memorial University seeks a collegial leader as its Vice-President (Grenfell Campus) who will strengthen the institution’s commitment to the region and province while accelerating the institution's successes in research, education, and community. The Vice-President emphasizes Grenfell Campus’s student-centered educational experience for undergraduate and graduate students while supporting the development and growth of programs across a variety of disciplines. They will champion and encourage meaningful community engagement, supporting communities and building partnerships in the region and around the world with respect and reciprocity, while reinforcing and accelerating emerging and existing research programs. The Vice-President (Grenfell Campus) reports to the President and Vice-Chancellor and is a member of Memorial’s senior executive team while acting as Grenfell Campus’s chief advocate and ambassador. They oversee all operations of the campus, working collaboratively with senior administrative, academic, student, and community leaders at the campus, across Memorial University’s multi-campus system, and with the broader community.
The successful candidate will be creative, constructive, and empathetic in leading the development of the campus’s next strategic plan in the context of Memorial’s broader goals. Meanwhile, they will leverage Grenfell Campus's strengths to address enrolment, retention and fundraising challenges. The Vice-President will oversee the allocation of resources in a complex budgetary environment, demonstrating a sound understanding of Grenfell's rich history, current context, and future opportunities, its commitment to teaching excellence and student success, and the university’s vital role in serving the province and its communities.
CANDIDATE PROFILE
The ideal candidate will have significant experience in university administration and will be eligible for a tenured academic appointment at Memorial University. You will have the ability to foster excellence and innovation in teaching and learning, research, and public engagement within a multi-campus environment. You will bring a collegial and collaborative style that is anchored in respect and recognition of the challenges of interdisciplinary settings. As an effective team-builder, you have an ability to unite, inspire and create innovative opportunities for collaboration across a diverse group of faculty, researchers, staff, and students. You possess excellent communication and partnership building skills, a respect for the principles of collegial governance in a unionized workplace, and the ability to build consensus and constructively address differing viewpoints while working towards shared objectives.
You will engage in strong, respectful partnerships with Indigenous communities and support the implementation of the Strategic Framework for Indigenization. You will demonstrate action-based leadership in advocating for and advancing institutional Indigenization and decolonization as well as equity, diversity, inclusion and anti-racism goals. The Vice-President (Grenfell Campus) will be a champion of Grenfell Campus and Memorial University and exhibit excellent organizational skills, financial management, strategic planning, integrity, and transparency. Experience working within a multi-campus institution and/or a small campus setting is preferred.
