Assistant Professor in Environmental and Regional Planning – Position Number 35840


The Department of City Planning invites applications for a full-time probationary (tenure-track) position at the rank of Assistant Professor commencing January 1, 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Candidates must hold a PhD in planning or a relevant allied field. Candidates must demonstrate experience with planning research that addresses climate change and resilience at urban and regional scales. Duties for this position comprise a full-time teaching load of three courses per year, including the Regional Planning Studio. The successful candidate will undertake research in their area of expertise, advise graduate students, and provide service within the University and broader community.

City Planning at the University of Manitoba is the oldest continuously running program in Canada accredited by the Professional Standards Board (PSB) for Planning in Canada (see http://www.psb-planningcanada.ca/). It is based in the Faculty of Architecture along with three other Master degree programs: Architecture, Interior Design and Landscape Architecture and a PhD program in Planning and Design. City Planning faculty members also contribute to the Faculty’s undergraduate interdisciplinary program in Environmental Design. The Master of City Planning program is studio-based and most projects require students and faculty to collaborate with communities and stakeholders in Winnipeg and/or the province of Manitoba. As the only U15 university in the province, our practice and research is designed to augment the capacity of communities, municipalities, and the province to engage in planning that enhances social equity, well-being and sustainability. The successful candidate will further the Department’s capacity to undertake projects and research at regional scales and will address the challenges that the social-ecological system face in relation to climate change.

Required Qualifications
• PhD in planning or relevant allied field
• certification or eligibility for certification as a Registered Professional Planner (RPP) in Manitoba (see http://www.psb-planningcanada.ca/CERTIFICATION/index.php)
• demonstrated record of successful teaching, including a minimum of two years’ experience teaching in project-based studio environments
• interest in engaging with local issues in prairie and/or northern environments and communities
• record of research including publications and/or external funding support appropriate for the level of appointment
• ability to teach courses that address environmental planning, climate change or resilience
• ability to teach in the program’s masters-level core courses (e.g., Planning Theory, Research Methods) and contribute courses at the undergraduate level to students in the Environmental Design program
• ability to advise and mentor graduate students in the master’s and PhD program.
