Assistant Professor Teaching Stream, Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing

University of Waterloo

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is coordinated within the Office of Indigenous Relations.

The Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) in the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo invites applications for a probationary appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream. A Master’s degree in mathematics, computer science, or a related discipline is preferred, but candidates with different educational backgrounds and sufficient mathematical background will be considered. Candidates are expected to have teaching experience at the post-secondary or secondary level. Candidates are expected to have either experience working with Indigenous students in Canada or experience with Indigenization in mathematics and/or computing education.

The successful candidate will be First Nations, Métis, or Inuk (Inuit) with lived experience of Indigenous worldviews, cultures and values and strong ties to First Nations, Métis and/or Inuit communities. We ask each interested applicant to include a statement indicating if they identify as First Nations, Métis, or Inuk in their cover letter. Supporting documentation for membership/citizenship in an Indigenous community will be required and possibly additional information about community connection, family, and relationship to working with Indigenous communities/knowledges may be required, if an applicant is invited for an interview.

Preference will be given to applicants with one or more of the following:
• Experience in education, outreach or enrichment activities at the elementary or secondary school level in mathematics and/or computing.
• Experience teaching mathematics and/or computing at the secondary school level and/or developing resources for secondary school teachers and students.

Responsibilities of the successful candidate will include:
• a normal teaching load of four one-term teaching tasks per year in mathematics and/or computer science,
• a leadership role in the CEMC’s efforts to support the Indigenization of mathematics and/or computing education in K to 12 schools across Canada,
• liaising with the Faculty of Mathematics Equity Officer, University’s Office of Indigenous Relations and Indigenous Knowledges and Anti-Racism unit, and
• participation in the extensive array of CEMC activities, including student and teacher workshops, development of online resources, and contest preparation and administration.

Depending on the experience and background of the successful candidate, responsibilities may also include:
• mentoring of Indigenous undergraduate and graduate students in the Faculty of Mathematics, and
• the possibility of consulting with faculty colleagues interested in better understanding how to incorporate Indigenous pedagogies in their instruction.

The anticipated start date is 1 January 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The salary range for this position is $80,000 to $130,000.
