Description
The Faculty of Arts, School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) invites applications for a two-year 0.5 FTE (half time) limited term position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching) of Dance. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2025.

The Dance Division acts as a leader in Dance Science in Canada with the nation¿s only BA Dance/BKin degree program and the first teaching certificate in safe dance principles. This position is one that will move both within and beyond the University to engage with community populations at all levels of physical experience and expertise. It will join an existing environment of priorities and initiatives in the Dance program and will o¿er key support for developing UCalgary as a centre of excellence in the study of cultural movement forms for community health, wellness and accessibility.

We are seeking an artist-scholar whose primary responsibilities for course instruction will be in applied dance practices (including dance pedagogy, safe dance practice, and inclusive dance approaches) as well as dance science at the undergraduate level; the successful applicant is expected to teach 3.5 courses (3.5 HCE) per year. As part of these responsibilities, the incumbent will also be expected to participate in the development of courses within the SCPA and be involved in extra-curricular applied dance activities on campus and within the broader community, with the goal to sustain a vibrant program. Mentorship of students and service to the SCPA, faculty, and University is also expected.

The preferred applicant will hold a PhD in Dance, Kinesiology, Dance Education or other relevant graduate-level credential. The incumbent will demonstrate teaching excellence by presenting an outstanding record of teaching effectiveness, evidence of pedagogical innovation, and experience with student mentorship and developing undergraduate curricula. A strong record of community-based artistic projects, artistic and/or research grants, as well as peer-reviewed publication is required. The successful applicant must demonstrate the ability to use and develop instructional strategies designed for diverse learning styles and academic goals. Preferred candidates will have safe dance practice certification as well as certification in other body-based learning systems (Alexander Technique, C-I Training, Feldenkrais or other somatic modalities).
