Description
The Department of Sociology in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Calgary invites applications for two three-year, limited term positions as Instructor. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2025.

The successful candidates must:
• have a PhD in Sociology or an appropriate, closely related discipline, conferred before 1 July 2025.
• demonstrate teaching effectiveness at the post-secondary level.
• demonstrate engagement with current research and professional development in postsecondary teaching and learning.
• provide evidence of expertise relevant to areas of expected teaching (for example, through a record of research and publication).
• demonstrate commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning community, including evidence of engagement in activities promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Description of positions
Teaching expectations: Teaching constitutes 70% of the workload for these positions. Successful candidates will be required to teach seven undergraduate courses per year, demonstrate and maintain expertise in the substantive areas in which they teach, and show commitment to effective and innovative pedagogical practice in large classes. Successful candidates will be expected to develop course material, supervise and mentor graduate students working as teaching assistants, mentor and support undergraduates in ways that may be required in addition to teaching (such as writing letters of reference and participating in activities led by the undergraduate student association), and work with colleagues to further the development of innovative courses and teaching techniques in our programs.

We are especially interested in applications from candidates who can teach courses in our law and society program, introductory sociology, and the sociology of law. There may also be opportunities for successful candidates to teach in other areas in sociology, or to create special topics courses related to these and other areas. Therefore applicants are invited to share their teaching experience and interests beyond the specified areas of need.

Research expectations: research activities consist 10% of the workload for these positions. Successful candidates are expected to maintain engagement in research, as shown through some combination of presentations, publications, and/or receipt of research funding. The research can be related to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SofTL) and/or substantive areas related to teaching expertise.

Service expectations: service activities constitute of 20% of the workload for these positions. Candidates should provide evidence of collegiality within their organization as well as commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in service roles. Successful candidates will be expected to engage in department activities, especially those related to the undergraduate programs, as consistent with the workload and terms of these positions.
