Assistant Professor, Liber Ero Chair in Climate Action and Sustainability

Simon Fraser University

The School of Resource and Environmental Management (REM) is an applied graduate and undergraduate school in which both social and natural scientists apply inter- and transdisciplinary approaches to research in resource and environmental management. Our mission is to inspire leadership and improve decision-making in environmental management through internationally recognized research, education, professional practice, and community engagement to support a socially just and ecologically sustainable world.

Given human-caused climate change, there is an urgent need for research and its application to help advance solutions for climate mitigation and adaptation. The successful candidate will lead an impactful research and engagement program that contributes to positive change for climate solutions and sustainability. We solicit applications from interdisciplinary natural scientists. Potential topics of interest include applied climate science and modeling that informs forward-looking decision-making; climate change adaptation and mitigation that contributes to sustainable development pathways; Indigenous approaches and perspectives for climate adaptation and resilience; and climate change resilience in social-ecological systems.

The successful candidate will be appointed as the inaugural holder of a research chair, the Liber Ero Chair in Climate Action and Sustainability. This endowed research chair is subject to renewal after an initial five-year appointment. The research chair endowment may provide partial teaching relief and additional resources to the chairholder, subject to negotiations. The successful Chair in Climate Action and Sustainability will deliver an impactful research and engagement program.

We invite applications from Ph.D. scientists with demonstrated expertise in the interdisciplinary aspects of climate science and sustainability. PhD candidates with solid indication of imminent completion may be hired at the rank of Instructor and will be promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor upon completion of the PhD. The position will contribute climate-related courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in REM, effectively bridging concepts from multiple disciplines to provide a holistic view of the complexities of natural resources and environmental management. The successful candidate will develop a nationally and internationally recognized program of research, teaching, engagement, and knowledge mobilization aimed at improving decision-making and climate outcomes. Potential courses associated with the position include Introductions to Resource Management (REM 100, REM 200) and Climate Science (REM 334 Earth’s Past Climates, 431/631 Climate Change and Environmental Management). This position aims to maintain these critical contributions in REM, while continuing to build interconnections with other natural and social scientists in REM, the Faculty of Environment, and SFU.

The expected start date is July 1, 2025.
