School of Physical Therapy

The Faculty of Health Sciences at Western University invites applications for a full-time probationary (tenure-track) position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the School of Physical Therapy with academic responsibilities in research, teaching and service in the area of practice of Upper Extremity Health and Rehabilitation. Qualified applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in a related field and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario. Applicants with expertise and a track record in upper extremity clinical research are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to applicants with a strong record of achievements in research for their stage of career. The selected appointee will be expected to establish and maintain an externally-funded research program, teach in the Advanced Health Care Practice Upper Extremity Rehabilitation field and the Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) Program within the School of Physical Therapy, and supervise graduate students in the Faculty of Health Sciences graduate programs. The successful applicant will also have a demonstrated capacity to contribute substantively to an inclusive and diverse academic community. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The effective date of the appointment is July 1, 2025, or as negotiated.

The School of Physical Therapy is a research-intensive unit with innovative professional and graduate programs. The applicant will have the opportunity to collaborate within The Roth | McFarlane Hand and Upper Limb Centre (HULC) - a world-renowned centre of excellence in education and research focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with complex neuromusculoskeletal conditions affecting hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders situated within St Joseph’s Health Care Centre. The HULC has specialized upper extremity surgeons and therapists including multiple clinician-scientists who are scientists within The Lawson Research Institute. HULC has internal research labs including three on-site (Lawson) engineering labs and a (HULC) Clinical Research Lab.

The School is home to the Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) program. The MPT program at Western is dedicated to being internationally recognized for excellence, leadership and innovation in Physical Therapy education, practice, and research through dedicated clinical, academic, research and professional partnerships. The program prepares students to seek licensure to practice physiotherapy in Canada in a wide range of practice settings. The School of Physical Therapy leads three fields of study in the Master of Clinical Science in Advanced Healthcare Practice program including: Comprehensive Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, Interdisciplinary Pain Management, and Sport and Exercise Medicine; and partners in the Upper Extremity Rehabilitation field - a fully online interprofessional advanced practice program, that provides face-to-face mentorship and that is mapped to the Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) exam. The School of Physical Therapy also leads the Physical Therapy Field in the MSc and PhD programs in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, including the combined MPT/PhD program.

Physical Therapy research aligns well with Faculty and University strategic investments, including Western’s
Bone and Joint Institute and Western Institute for Neuroscience. The School has three research Chairs and has strong clinical and academic partners within the London community with international recognition for research (e.g., St Joseph’s Health Care London and the Roth I McFarlane Hand and Upper Limb Centre and The Gray Centre for Mobility and Activity at Parkwood Institute). The School also has active research links with the four Research Centres in the Faculty, including the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging, the Centre for Research in Health Equity and Social Inclusion, the National Centre for Audiology, and the International Centre for Olympic Studies.
