Assistant Professor in Music
University of Guelph
The College of Arts at the University of Guelph is seeking a full-time, tenure-track, Assistant Professor in Music (MUSC). The position will begin July 1st, 2025. The candidate will be appointed to the School of Fine Art and Music (SOFAM), which houses our Art History, Music, and Studio Art programs. This position will teach in our undergraduate music program.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD or DMA in Composition, Music Theory, Musicology, or a related discipline with a research and creative focus in music production, music and technology, and/or sound studies. ABD candidates will be considered only if a defense date has been scheduled. The candidate’s teaching and research should demonstrate expertise in recorded music practices, the current Canadian music industry, and current music production technologies. Candidates must show fluency with a diverse array of twenty-first century music genres (i.e. hip hop, R&B, heavy metal, country, EDM, pop and so on) and demonstrate knowledge of DAWs and music notation softwares. Preference will be given to candidates with experience writing music for the moving image or songwriting/arranging experience, and a knowledge of recording practices, digital music creation techniques, and production histories. The successful candidate will also demonstrate practical experience in ethical, inclusive, anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and decolonial recording practices that emphasize community-engaged learning.
The chosen candidate will maintain an active research profile and may contribute to community-engaged scholarly and creative initiatives in the College of Arts (COA). It is expected that the candidate will also assist with recruitment for, and retention in, the Music major, both as a part of our Bachelor of Arts and our Bachelor of Creative Arts, Health, and Wellness degrees. As an instructor for the Music program, this faculty member will also serve on our MUSC curriculum committee and help to build connections between this program and community partners.
In this tenure track position, the successful candidate will commit to a 50% teaching, 30% research, and 20% service distribution of effort. Though the music department does not have a graduate program, there is the possibility of graduate teaching and supervision in other parts of the College of Arts.
